Now via Zoom! The 5 Hour Class is a Classroom Course which consists of group activities, lecture and driver training films.
Required by New York State Dept. of Motor Vehicles, this course must be completed before one can schedule a road test appointment.
Student must have a valid NYS Picture Permit to register & take a class – Paper permit holders must wait for their picture permit to come in the mail to take a class.
Completion Certificates can be mailed or picked up the following business day. Certificates expire 1 year after completion. The original certificate must be presented to the NYS motor vehicle examiner at the time of the road test. Photocopies/photos of your certificate will not be accepted by NYS Examiners at your Road Test Site.
It is the student’s responsibility to have and present all of their required documentation to the examiner on the day of the road test. Find out more information about what to bring to your road test here, or by contacting your local DMV office.
5 Hour Courses are held online via Zoom. Students receive a zoom email link within 24 hours of class start.
Note: This class does NOT provide an insurance discount nor a reduction of points on the student’s future driver’s license.

Do I need a photo learner permit to take the 5-hour class?
Yes. According to NYS DMV rules, you must have your plastic photo learner permit in hand to take the course. If you only have the temporary paper permit, you must wait until your photo ID arrives in the mail.
How much does the 5-hour class cost and how do I pay?
The fee for our 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course is $75.00. You can easily register and pay online through our secure website. Once registered, you will receive a Zoom link via email within 24 hours of your scheduled class time.
How do I get my MV-278 completion certificate?
After successfully completing the Zoom class, your MV-278 Certificate will be processed immediately. You can choose to have it mailed to the address on your learner permit or pick it up at our office the following business day. You must have the original certificate in hand on the day of your road test.
How long is the 5-hour certificate valid?
The MV-278 certificate is valid for one year from the date of issuance. If you do not pass your road test within that year, you must retake the 5-hour course to receive a new, valid certificate.
Does the 5-hour class include a test or exam?
No. Unlike some self-paced online "pilot" programs, our live Zoom class does not have a final exam. It is a classroom-style course consisting of lectures, group activities, and driver training films. Your "passing grade" is based on your attendance and active participation.
Can 16 and 17-year-olds take the 5-hour course via Zoom?
Yes. Our Zoom-based Distance Learning course is approved for all ages (16+). While New York's "self-paced/pre-recorded" online courses are restricted to those 18 and older, our live Zoom format is legal for teenagers (and anyone with a valid New York State Picture Permit!) and counts toward their licensing requirements.
What happens if I lose my 5-hour course certificate?
If you lose your original MV-278 certificate, you must contact our office to request a duplicate. Please note that the DMV does not accept photocopies or pictures of certificates; you must present the original document to the examiner at the road test site.
Does this course provide a discount on my car insurance?
No. The 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course is strictly for obtaining your license. If you are looking for an insurance discount or point reduction, you should register for our 6-Hour Defensive Driving Course (PIRP), which provides a 10% insurance reduction for three years.
